Hugo's Story

Today we traveled to Guarari, the second city we are visiting in Costa Rica.  When we arrived, we went directly to the organization our school has been supporting this year, Sonrisas con Esperanza.  When we arrived, we sat down with the leader of the organization, Hugo, and he told us his testimony and how it affect his life and led to his role in ministry.  Hugo told us how his father was 70 and raped his mother when she was a young teenager, then left his pregnant mother to provide for and survive with a new baby.  Due to the fact that his father had left his mother, she committed suicide at age 19, when Hugo was 6, because she was unwanted and looked down upon.  The next year Hugo's father also passed away, leaving him without a family.  Hugo then struggled with depression, even attempting four times.  During this rough period in his life, God spoke to him telling him to go into ministry through being a clown.  He then used his ministry to reach children, which led to the the creation of more ministries within the community.

Hugo's story directly impacted me - knowing that a man who was left with nothing, not even a family, found comfort and put his faith in God.  Hugo used his circumstances to spread God's word and glory across his community.  These ministries have recently led to a decrease in crime and violence, proving that Hugo's efforts are truly impactful.  Hugo is an inspiring person and has impacted me through his own testimony.
